Prof. Fred Gardaphe to deliver free Esposito lecture, "Looking for the Laugh: Humor and the Future of Being Italian American"On March 28
Dartmouth, Mass. -- Mar. 20, 2012: The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth will welcome Dr. Fred Gardaphe, author of books including From Wiseguys to Wise Men and Italian Signs, American Streets next Wednesday, March 28.
Gardaphe will present the 2012 Esposito Visiting Faculty Fellow lecture, "Looking for the Laugh: Humor and the Future of Being Italian American" -- an exploration of serious issues of stereotyping and portrayals of Italian Americans in the arts and media through humor.
Gardaphe, the Distinguished Professor of English and Italian American Studies at Queens College in New York, is renowned for his ability to examine Italian American culture with insight, compassion, wit, and a sense of fun.

The Esposito Visiting Faculty Fellowship was established by former Provost Louis Esposito to "support visiting faculty members who will make presentations and lead discussions in undergraduate courses that include either the study of the Italian-American experience or Italian history and culture. In addition, the visiting faculty fellow will present a public lecture on the social, cultural, psychological, historical or esthetic dimensions of the Italian American experience or on Italian-American achievements in the arts, literature, science, and industry."
