UMass Dartmouth Kaput Center & Greenlight for Girls to host 5th annual Greenlight for Girls Day SouthCoast
UMass Dartmouth's Kaput Center for Research & Innovation in STEM Education, in partnership with Greenlight for Girls, will host the 5th annual Greenlight for Girls Day SouthCoast at the UMass Dartmouth campus this Saturday, April 25, 2015. More than 150 female students - ages 10-15 years-old - from the surrounding areas of SouthCoast, will come to learn the fun in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
UMass Dartmouth Associate Professor of Bioengineering Dr. Tracie Ferreira will offer the keynote address for the event. Her interests include Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology and Tissue Engineering. Dr. Ferreira oversees the Ferreira Lab at UMass Dartmouth. She received her Ph.D. from Georgetown University in 1996.
Throughout the morning, the participants will attend workshops.

Greenlight for Girls Day SouthCoast begins at 9:00 a.m. at the UMass Dartmouth Claire T. Carney Library Robert F. Stoico/FirstFed Charitable Foundation Grand Reading Room. The workshops will take place in the University's Dion and Science & Engineering Buildings. The event will conclude with a panel discussion with the girls where they ask questions regarding STEM fields to influential female STEM professionals. The Kaput Center for Research and Innovation in STEM Education has been established in the spirit and vision of James Kaput, whose innovative thinking and leadership inspired many in the field of mathematics education. The purpose of this Center is to provide a focus and support for sustained investigation of foundational issues in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.
Greenlight for Girls, founded by Fall River's own Melissa Rancourt, has grown into an international leader in the effort to promote STEM to girls of all ages and backgrounds, in order to stimulate greater participation of girls and women of all ages in STEM-related studies and careers.
