The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's Center for Women, Gender & Sexuality (CWGS) celebrated a powerful milestone on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, bringing alumni, students, faculty, staff, and community partners together to honor 55 years of education, advocacy, and inclusion.

Founded in 1970 as the Women's Referral Center, CWGS is the second-oldest collegiate women's center in the nation. Its 55th-anniversary celebration highlighted decades of transformation—from a small referral service to a multifaceted center supporting women, gender-expansive, and LGBTQIA+ communities.

The celebration opened in the Claire T. Carney Library with a screening of "Lilly", followed by a reception and dinner. Attendees enjoyed remarks from distinguished alumni and the keynote address by internationally known activist and scholar Jean Kilbourne, who spoke on the legacy of women pioneers and the continued need for media literacy and gender justice.

The event also featured remarks from University officials, Center friends, and alumni.

"What made it even more special was bringing friends who didn't really have feminism at the forefront of their minds—my friends from very different backgrounds—and watching them see themselves reflected in the stories. That's what this Center does so beautifully. It opens the eyes of the wider world," said Gina Regonini '02.

The anniversary event not only highlighted CWGS's history but also its enduring relevance. From its early days offering reproductive health education to its current role as a hub for gender equity, LGBTQIA+ support, and intersectional advocacy, CWGS continues to shape students' on-campus experience.

Speaking to the crowd, Juli Parker, Director of CWGS, gave guests parting words, "Tonight reminds us of the power of community—of looking across the room at old friends and new and knowing that we are in this together. This Center exists because so many people believe deeply in the importance of our work. While the world has changed dramatically since 1970, our mission has not. We continue to fight for safety, inclusion, and equity, and we know that small acts of courage can ripple into real change. Here's to 55 years, and to the next generation of troublemakers and changemakers who will keep us bold, honest, and loud. The work of justice is never finished—but neither is our hope."
