Share the Dream essay by Lydia Hill
My name is Lydia Hill, I was born on December 12, 2005 and I am 19 years old. I have a younger brother, his name is Orion and we are both adopted from separate families. I was born in Chicago and have lived in 3 different states. Illinois and then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico after five years in Chicago. After another five years spent in New Mexico, my family and I moved to a small town about 30 minutes outside of Boston called Acton. Around my 7th or 8th grade year my brother and I’s adoptive parents got divorced. I have now lived in Acton for about 10 years and have graduated high school at their local high school, ABRHS. I am now proceeding to start and attend college here at UMass Dartmouth.
I decided to select UMass Dartmouth as the college I wanted to attend because it has multiple good qualities. For example, the idea of the College Now program is a great way to help students that have been in special education for most of their academic career get acclimated to being in the college atmosphere. There are also numerous clubs and programs to join to make making connections better and easier for students. But, one of my main personal reasons to attend this specific school was that it is much more financially sustainable and easier to afford. My plan for while I attend this school is simply to find something that I enjoy. I have had a hard time picking a major and am a bit all over the place. But, while I have been here so far, I have started to come up with more ideas on what I would like to do with myself in the future even though I haven’t been able to put my finger on it quite yet.
One of my biggest goals here is to not be so dependent and not need help with everything all of the time. This is something I became much more aware about the second I got to college. I realized that it felt like everyone around me was so much more confident and prepared for this new experience while I was and still am struggling with everything all the time. But as time goes on, I’m sure it will get better as long as I’m doing my best.
Even though I am still undecided technically, no matter what I end up doing I want the education that I obtain from this campus to help me be able to support other people in the world. Whether it’s in a local community or globally, I want to help people in some way and make an amazing impact on their lives.
