Sustainability Experts to discuss aftermath of Gulf Spill during lunchtime panel at UMass Dartmouth
In the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (BP Oil Spill) on April 20, 2010, a global conversation has erupted over the environmental, political and economic impact of oil on global activities.
Join international author and economist John Perkins (via SKYPE), SMAST Dean John Farrington, Dr. Garry Clayton and Dr. Dean Moosavi in a Gulf Oil Spill Symposium Wednesday, September 15 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at the UMass Dartmouth Library browsing area. The UMass Claire T. Carney Library is located on the Dartmouth Campus at 285 Old Westport Road, North Dartmouth, MA.
Perkins has recently spoken about the spill and how it is an indicator of how unsustainable our unrelenting pursuit of oil is today. It is a wakeup call that the United States is finally hearing because it is close to home, though other peoples around the globe have experienced similar devastation for the sake of fossil fuel and oil industry profits.
Dr. Farrington recently appeared at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership in Baton Rouge Louisiana, speaking about the 2003 Bouchard 120 oil spill in Buzzards Bay, which gushed 98,000 No. 6 fuel into the bay.
Dr. Moosavi's work straddles the border between the environmental sciences and science education. In the environmental sciences he focuses on biogeochemistry, climate change and coastal/beach processes in boreal and arctic wetlands as well as in rapidly eroding beach environments such as the barrier islands of the Mississippi delta and coastal Massachusetts.
