UMass Dartmouth celebrates Women's HERstory Month

In-person and virtual events to celebrate and inform

women's history month 2022

To celebrate Women's HERstory Month, groups from across campus have come together to hold virtual and in-person events that highlight and center women's stories.

Every March since 1996, the UMass Dartmouth Center for Women, Gender & Sexuality has organized a celebration of Women's History Month. In 1978, the Sonoma, California Commission on the Status of Women invented a Women's History Week coinciding with International Women's Day on March 8. In 1980, the National Women’s History Project (now the National Women's History Alliance) lobbied Congress for national recognition and in February of 1980, March 2-8 was declared Women's History Week by Presidential Proclamation by President Jimmy Carter. Eight years later, it was designated Women's History Month.

According to the National Women's History Museum, the 2022 theme is “Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.” The theme is “a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history.”
