Discovering a passion for art
Chidinma Irabor ’22, originally from Boston, moved to Nigeria with her parents where she lived for a number of years. She was eager to come back to the States to pursue her college career. She landed at UMass Dartmouth where she discovered that she could take her love of art and design from a hobby to a career with a degree in graphic design. When she is able to live on campus (she’s currently taking classes remotely from her home in Wrentham, MA), she enjoys the scenic campus and the resources here that help her succeed.
I am passionate about: “Art and drawing. I am grateful to have this opportunity to pursue an education that will help me turn my passions into a career doing what I love.”
With my major, I want to: “There are so many roads I can take with my major in graphic design. It’s wide-open. I love designing logos and marketing materials for companies. But I also love clothing design. And now, I’m really interested in book design.”
Before graphic design, I studied: “I had to choose between science, social studies, and technology in my Nigerian high school, so I picked science. I came to UMassD as a biology major, then finally changed to what I really loved: graphic design.”
My favorite course is: “Studying typefaces in my typology course with Michelle Bowers opened up my interest in book design after we completed an assignment to create a booklet.”
